Our Weekend Net-Flick for this week has the same type of heart that can be found in our last pick, Safety Not Guaranteed. Adventureland is not a movie that I loved the first time I watched it, but repeated viewings have given me a new appreciation for the film. So when I saw that it was on FX last Friday, I immediately put it on and did not change the channel until it was over.
What makes Adventureland work so well (aside from its near-perfect cast and kickass soundtrack) is its sense of loss and longing. Greg Mottola’s script and direction infuses the film with a deep nostalgia for simpler times (whether they be the 1980s or, more simply, being in your early twenties during the summertime). Even in moments when Adventureland plays up the comedy more than it explores the interesting and palpable character relationships, the script still never loses its grasp on James’s point of view and what it feels like to be young, lost, and in love.
If you haven’t had the chance to see Adventureland yet, do yourself a favor and fire it up this weekend. It’s a funny, moving, emotional amusement park ride that you’ll never want to get off.
PS. Even if you’re not a Kristen Stewart fan, please still give this a shot. There’s so much more to the movie than her role. Plus, it’s the best performance she’s ever given.
